In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I do a deep dive into my seven takeaways from the brand new Cinderella film.
It’s a bit of an unusual source of inspiration for life lessons, I know. But I couldn’t help but reflect on how this groundbreaking reimagining of a beloved Disney classic had such a profound impact on me personally, and even as a business owner!
Takeaway #1: Familiarity Grows Your Community.
Another recent musical that I love is The Greatest Showman, but I just wasn’t taken in as much as I was by Cinderella because all of the songs were new to me.
Cinderella, on the other hand, was familiar, which led me to be completely taken in by the movie. I fell head over heels in love with it.
One of the things that leads to burnout among many business owners is the urge to always do new things, that they should always be striving for originality over repeating the same type of content over and over again.
This is Cinderella’s secret: By taking what’s familiar (the soundtrack from the original Disney film) and remixing (aka “repurposing) it, the movie was able to create a totally fresh experience that feels like home at the same time.
Takeaway #2: There is always room for more at the top.
It’s obvious that the whole movie is anchored by feminism as one of its main themes. One of the ways they express the empowerment of women is through a soundtrack dominated by amazing female artists.
When you see other women succeed in our field, I hope that you take it as an opportunity to realize that they are leading the way for you to make your own name.
Takeaway #3: It’s absolutely inspiring to see strong female characters in this reimagining of a classic fairytale.
Another thing I love about the movie is that Cinderella’s dreams were bigger than just marrying a prince.
To have strong female characters who aren’t afraid of putting their hands up and taking up the mantle of leadership in their respective worlds is a beautiful thing to see onscreen in the context of such a beloved fairytale.
Takeaway #4: Cinderella never needed saving.
Taking off from my previous point, it’s wonderful to see how capable Cinderella is on her own. Unlike the classic Disney princess movies, she never needed to be saved.
It’s not selfish to choose yourself, because you will inspire others to do the same. If you follow your highest calling, it benefits everyone in the entire world.
You are your own rescuer.
Takeaway #5: There is no magic in the world that can make high heels comfortable to wear.
This one’s a quick aside but the scene was too funny not to mention: When the fairy godmother creates Cinderella’s glass slippers, she complains and asks if he could make them more comfortable, to which the godmother says something to the tune of, “Are you crazy? My magic can only do so much!”
Takeaway #6: Other people’s criticisms of your dreams are not a reflection of you, but of themselves.
The next time somebody berates you for your dreams, know that their criticism is not a reflection of who you are. They have no idea what you’re capable of. The limitations they project onto you are a reflection of their inner world.
If you believe in you, you will be unstoppable.
Takeaway #7: If you have a dream, live as if it has already come true.
This is manifesting. Cinderella is seeing her future self, clear as day. She sees her possibility. This is what fuels her belief.
