In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I give my thoughts on how and why to reparent your inner child. Going through this process myself has been a life-changing experience, particularly as a mom.
By reparenting your inner child, you will learn to be at peace with yourself as a person and at peace with yourself as a parent.
What is the “inner child”?
Our inner child is another identity or persona that lives within all of us. It is that childlike, joyful place within us.
It truly is the child within us.
Obviously, all of us were children in the past; but, many of us, ever since we entered adulthood, have buried that child and haven’t reconnected with him or her for many years.
Our inner child can be of any age. Often, when we are wounded at some point in our childhood and never heal from that wound, that child haunts us whether we are aware of it or not.
Learning to reparent your inner child will free you of those traumas.
Why is inner child healing important?
“I’m not good-looking enough.”
“I’m not smart enough.”
“I’m not worthy.”
We develop the majority of our false or limiting beliefs as a result of those childhood wounds, whether they were seemingly insignificant or truly significant memories.
We usually don’t realize that a wound has been inflicted in the moment nor in the years that follow. We often discover these wounds when we’re already in the midst of doing inner child healing work, when we’re peeling back the layers of our life.
This work can help you pinpoint the rules you live by as you go about your life.
Learn to Love Yourself for Who You Are
As a child, I thought I was too dark, that I wasn’t pretty enough, that I didn’t belong.
I did all I could to be accepted and loved. Growing up, I lived in constant fear that I would fail school. I went through a good chunk of my career thinking I could be fired at any moment.
My oath to myself was that I would prove to the world how capable I was.
I spent my life chasing whatever I felt would prove that I was good enough.
I now know this because of my inner child work. If you asked me ten years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to name it.
Once I learned to love myself for how I look, how I think, and how I feel, I began the process of healing.
Notice What Triggers You as a Parent
It’s common to get annoyed whenever our kids act like kids. We parents have a tendency to stand tall and stiff and berate our children for misbehaving without even attempting to see things from their point of view.
If you find yourself doing this, take it as a sign that you’re probably out of touch with your inner child.
We’ve lost our sense of wonder, awe, joy, and curiosity.
Take it as an invitation to look within yourself, uncover old wounds, and learn how to heal yourself to become a better woman or man, and mother or father.
How Does Inner Child Healing Work?
I take my clients through a deep meditation and we try to connect to some challenging part of their life currently taking place.
We then try to surface a memory or set of memories that are bubbling just below the surface. It’s up to the client to discover those memories on their own.
Your inner child may be wary and scared to talk to you at first, because to them, you may be a stranger at that moment.
How Healing My Inner Child Made Me a Better Parent
We all want to be the “perfect” parent but we all fall short.
It is our responsibility to heal. We cannot go back and fix things. The only thing we can do is heal what’s happened.
We slow down to match our child’s pace. We have all the time in the world for them. We learn to be in the present moment, to be right there with him or her, to make them feel safe.
