In Europe, about 30 million tonnes of plastic waste are collected every year. However, 84% of that waste is incinerated, exported, or sent to landfills. How can the chemical industry change this? Chemical recycling is the answer.

The chemical industry has developed new technologies that offer complementary solutions to existing mechanical recycling processes. Unlike traditional mechanical recycling, which grinds down plastics into smaller pellets to be remolded, chemical recycling breaks plastics down to their molecular level, returning them to their original building blocks or monomers.

In this episode, we spoke with the European Chemical Industry Council's Innovation Director, Annick Meerschman, to learn more about the opportunities and challenges of chemical recycling and its role in achieving a circular economy.
