It’s no surprise that there’s a constant juggle between being empathetic, while also making sure that the work to be done is getting done. In this era of leadership, especially with the rise of the Courageous Leader, leaders in business need to be able to have empathy for their people as a retention strategy and they also need to make sure productivity isn’t lost in the process. 


What You Need to Know - The What

What is empathy? Simply put, empathy neutralises negativity. When there’s frustration, anger or dissatisfaction with a team member, the ability to temporarily step into their shoes, see their perspective is what defines empathy.


In the workplace, as leaders you don’t always know or are privy to the full spectrum of what someone might be going through. Having a generous assumption that someone is doing their best effort, and being open to listening is key to building empathy. 



What You Need to Do - The How

How to develop empathy. - YES empathy is a learned and practiced skill. 

They types of empathy

Emotional empathy or active empathy

Cognitive empathy

What happens when there’s too much empathy. 

Healthy and productive empathy.
