Ministry of Health launches national survey on Schistosomiasis elimination

During the month of April 2025, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs will conduct a national survey to assess the presence of schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, among primary school children aged 8 to 11 years. This initiative is a critical step in verifying whether Saint Lucia has successfully eliminated the disease, marking a significant milestone in public health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) requires countries to demonstrate the interruption of schistosomiasis transmission over a five-year period before declaring elimination.
