The Health Ministry Marks World Leprosy Day 2025 with Renewed Commitment to Education and Advocacy

On the last Sunday in January, the world celebrates World Leprosy Day. This year, on January 26th, St. Lucia joined the global observance, highlighting the theme of “Beating Leprosy, Ending Stigma, and Advocating for Mental Well-being.”

Leprosy has been part of human history since biblical times but remains misunderstood and feared by many. This disease affects the skin, peripheral nerves, and eyes, potentially causing visible deformities, loss of limbs, and even blindness if not treated early.

Leprosy is not just a medical issue; it is also a social one that can profoundly impact the lives of those diagnosed and their families. The stigma associated with leprosy can be as crippling as the disease itself, leading to isolation, discrimination, and a significant toll on mental health. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves and others, dispelling myths, fostering understanding, and promoting inclusion.
