We’ve all been there…

You turn on your computer, click on a program… and then you wait. And wait. And wait.

Suddenly, something that used to take seconds now feels like it takes forever. And the first thought most people have?

👉 “That’s it… I need a new computer.”

But what if that’s not actually true?

This week on KE-NNECT – Making Technology Simple, host Ron Fiedler is joined by resident technology expert Kirt Hignett to break down one of the most common frustrations people face — a slow computer — and explain what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Right from the start, Ron highlights something we often forget — computers are just like cars. If you don’t maintain them, they won’t perform at their best.

And as Kirt explains, most slow computers aren’t broken… they’re simply overloaded.

Over time, devices build up temporary files, outdated software, unused programs, and background apps that quietly eat away at performance.

The good news?

Many of the fixes are surprisingly simple.

One of the biggest takeaways from the episode is something we’ve all heard before — but often ignore:

👉 Turn it off… and turn it back on again.

It might sound basic, but restarting your computer regularly clears background processes, allows updates to install properly, and can solve a huge number of issues almost instantly.

From there, Kirt walks listeners through simple, practical steps to improve performance, including:

  • Clearing cache and temporary files
  • Removing programs and apps you no longer use
  • Managing startup programs
  • Keeping your system updated
  • Even physically cleaning dust from your machine to prevent overheating

The conversation then takes a deeper dive into what’s actually inside your computer — breaking down terms like CPU (the brain), RAM (working memory), and storage (where everything lives) in a way that’s easy for anyone to understand.

One key insight?

👉 Upgrading small components — like switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) — can dramatically improve performance without replacing the entire computer.

Ron and Kirt also discuss when it is time to upgrade, with a simple rule of thumb:

✔ Around 5 years old, it may be time to consider a replacement

✔ Under that, a tune-up or upgrade is often all you need

They also touch on avoiding the common trap of overspending on unnecessary upgrades, with Kirt reminding listeners:

👉 “There’s no point buying a Ferrari if you’re just going down the street for milk.”

By the end of the episode, one message is clear:

Technology doesn’t have to be overwhelming — and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

With a little understanding, regular maintenance, and the right advice, you can keep your computer running smoothly for years.
