Paul MacAlindin was called to help create a National Youth Orchestra in the world's toughest place for music, Iraq. Through his book, UPBEAT: the Story of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq, he explains how a youth orchestra became the crucible for the young musicians' trauma and hunger for education, to create the most powerful cultural ambassador Iraq has ever seen. Although the story ends tragically with the invasion of Daesh in 2014, MacAlindin reflects on the power of paradox and conflict in creating powerful art and uniting people in peace.
