Rick "Catfish Hunter" Cassano - "Exposing Online Romance Scams"
- 55:23
- December 22nd 2023
This is the first time I’ve introduced my guest for the show without using his real name! The reason for this is the nature of the investigative work he does, exposing scammers in online romantic, or “cat fishing”, schemes. Having investigated over 4000 cases, he knows a thing or two. Rick Cassano, not his real name, is my guest today.
He does this for no compensation, and we’ll talk about how it got started and why he does it. He will reveal parts of his past that make him good at what he does, but much of it he has learned by doing, getting better with each case, seeing patterns develop and the various, despicable ways these people prey on people who are often in vulnerable stages in their lives.
We’ll talk about how they work their way into the confidence and trust of their targets, and some of the methods they employ to steal, not only the hearts, but the money, from them. He will tell us how they don’t stop and often will lead them down further and deeper into the scam, often resulting in stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars!
He assures us that these victims are often intelligent, successful and worldly, but they are up against professionals who are highly trained and part of large criminal organizations. In fact, the scammers are typically working with a dozen or more targets at any given time.
Rick will tell us red flags to watch for and certain profiles that the scammers typically use to set up their targets. This could happen to almost anyone, so don’t think you or your loved ones are immune from it.

Lure of the Lake
Lake Oconee, Georgia, located halfway between Augusta and Atlanta, is a man-made paradise with incredible beauty that makes it a great vacation destination for people of all ages. More than that, though, it's a community for those that are looking for a peaceful life filled with nature and beauty.
I, myself, am a member of that community. I moved to Reynolds in 2020 and started to hear the incredible stories of its residents. Join me, now, as we take a plunge into some fascinating stories of the many well-lived lives of our community and learn why they were Lured to the Lake.
