Black Americans--neither enslaved nor free--could obtain patent protection
To understand and celebrate the accomplishments of Black inventors in America, we must first understand the racial, economic, and legal climate in America during the 17th through 19th centuries. While Black Americans mightily contributed to the economic growth of this nation, many were snubbed from the historical and financial benefits of their inventions. In short, Blacks were not eligible for patent protection. Further, many enslaved Americas of African descent were intellectually robbed by their so-called owners, leaving the so-called masters unjustly enriched to reap all the benefits.
