Balance is Thinkin’ about Jeff Beck

With profound sadness, I heard the news of Jeff Beck’s passing 0n 10 January 2023.

His technique was unique. His imagination was limitless and he was the ultimate guitar players' player – A towering giant in the guitar world and an inspiration to the heroes of the instrument

Jeff Beck's willingness to showcase emerging musical talent paid dividends with the addition of 21-year-old virtuoso bassist Tai Wilkenfield to his live band in 2007, with the same lineup touring the world in 2009 with a memorable live performance filmed at Ronnie Scott's in London.

I first saw Jeff beck when he was in the Yardbirds back in the middle/late 60’s – and was just astounded then by his guitar playing and have done so ever since, to me his unique style of playing was something that no one could match – over the years I have been lucky enough to see Jeff Beck a few times and listened to hours of his music.

This Mix is my nod of respect to the massive talent we have just lost – I think myself fortunate to have heard and appreciate his music both Live & Recorded.

In this mix, are some of my personal favourites of Jeff’s music and I have tried to include many live recordings – especially when he is in collaboration with other artists - for me, that is where Jeff blossomed, shined and belonged.

Also, I've put up 4 videos on our website – I recommend you watch them in order

  1. Why Jeff Beck is uncopiable
  2. Jeff Beck talks music on Sky Arts TV 2013
  3. Jeff Beck – live from Ronnie Scotts – full show
  4. Jeff Beck live from the woodlands – full show

Thank you Jeff for all the many years of making my head nod with my eyes closed and taking me to a nice place.

RIP Jeff Beck

Jazz Matters

Jazz Matters is a not-for-profit hobby project that I’m extremely proud of.

It began life in May 2021 as NuDirections, a weekly radio show on a London community station. That spirit of discovery still runs through everything I do.

But today, Jazz Matters has evolved into a global podcast platform for Jazz and World music lovers — reaching over 40,000 open-minded listeners across 57 countries on more than 24 platforms.2025/6 marks a new era. My love of music has always gone beyond Jazz, so I’ve created two distinct but connected spaces here

Jazz Matters: Podcasts, Playlists and Music Videos.

Jazz Lines: Blogs, Interviews, Gallery & Pulse for Who's Shaping the Scene.

I’m also preparing a full digital relaunch from my new studio, from 1st May 2026, then every Jazz Matters podcast, mix, and special will stream exclusively from my website—no third-party platforms and no algorithms. Until then, you can listen here and on 24+ podcast platforms.

Alongside the music, you’ll find in Jazz Lines, my platform for blogs, interviews, gallery, and pulse that links to things that catch my ear and eye. A bold new chapter begins soon. New location. New music player. New studio.

Jazz Matters. Because the music — and everything around it — truly does.

Enjoy the music I love
