Seahawks fans , thanks for joining Bill Alvstad and Keith Myers for the latest edition of the Seahawks Playbook Podcast. This week, we finally have put the draft process behind us and we get to talk about actual players the Seahawks have selected and are now on the 90 man roster. Keith and I have had a great time these last few months coming on and discussing hundreds of prospects and imagining what kind of a fit they would be on the team. No more of that! The picks are in and we get to discuss our newest Seahawks in this show.
In late breaking news right after Keith and I recorded the show, it was reported the team released two offensive lineman with larger cap hit numbers. One was expected and one was not. DJ Fluker, the loved, but often injured starting Right Guard was let go generating a cap savings number of $3.5M dollars. This move, while somewhat unexpected, was not surprising. His cap hit left Fluker exposed a bit on the roster, and when the Seahawks drafted Damien Lewis out of LSU in the 3rd round, it became clear that the team decided it was time to move on. The other lineman released was long time starting center Justin Britt. Britt was scheduled to make over $11.0M dollars in 2020, but $8.5 Million of that was not guaranteed, and by releasing Britt, that is the cap savings amount for the Seahawks. The Seahawks have now generated $12.1M in new cap savings, and may be looking to spend that money on the defense. Seattle could still use DE and DT help as well as help at Nickle Corner. Jadaveon Clowney is still sitting out there and the two parties could come together to bring Clowney back. Other options include DE Everson Griffen, as well as potential trade targets in Yannick Ngakoue or Tackle Chris Jones as well as DT Damon "Snacks" Harrison. Any of those moves would be a welcome addition to a defense that struggled last year, and still feels like it's one or two pieces away from improving.
