Seahawks fans, Welcome back to the Seahawks Playbook Podcast. Join your hosts Bill Alvstad and Keith Myers as we talk Seahawks Football! Up this week, Bill and Keith start the conversation about the upcoming frenzy in the NFL known as Free Agency. When a players contract has come up, that player can choose to resign with his current team, or enter the open market of free agency to sign a contract with any of the other 31 teams that is willing to compensate that player with a dollar figure that both sides agree to.
The first few days on the open market are truly a frenzy, where the highest profile free agents command all the attention, and all the money that teams can offer. After a few days, things settle down a bit and a 2nd and 3rd wave of 2nd and 3rd tier players get their deals. This year is more unpredictable than most because of the unsettled nature of the salary cap, and some uncertainty of next years cap as well. Many teams currently have little to no cap space such as the Seahawks (Estimated to be around $4 Million currently). While almost half the league has zero cap space to 10's of millions of dollars over the cap. Those teams will need to shed all of those contracts prior to the new league year and free agency, which begins on March 15th.
The focus of this show will be players entering free agency on the offensive side of the ball. QB's, RB's, TE's, WR's, and Offensive Lineman. We talk about Seattle's own players who are up for new deals, and players from across the league who will be available to sign. What will the Seahawks be able to do with very little cap space? That is the question we try to begin to answer.
