Unextinct w/ Dr Cromwell Purchase

This week I’m talking to Dr Cromwell Purchase of the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (ACTP).

Cromwell and his team have been working as part of a 22-year breeding programme to regenerate the Spix’s Macaw, a bird that has been extinct in the wild since 2000 due to illegal trade, hunting and the destruction of its natural habitat.

On 11 June 2022, the Spix’s Macaw will become the first-ever species to be made “unextinct”, when the first eight birds of Dr Purchase’s breeding programme will be released back into their ancestral home: the Brazilian Caatinga.

The release of the first eight birds will be immortalised through the launch of the UNEXTINCT NFT project: a collection of exclusive digital artworks designed by award-winning and world-renowned wildlife photographer Tim Flach. The collection will be launched on 11th June 2022 at 6.30pm ET / 11.30pm GMT on curated NFT platform Nifty Gateway.
