In this episode of the Global Soccer Education podcast, I talk to one of the influential coaches in the recent evolution of the Manchester City Academy, Darren Bowman.
Darren was the Head of the Junior Academy & Schools Programme at the City Academy before progressing into the full time role of Lead Youth Development Phase Coach.
After 11 years at the club, Darren saw a number of his Junior Academy recruits successfully earn professional contracts. At that point he felt a he needed a new challenge.
Continuing his habit of pushing the boundaries of his own personal and professional development, he accepted a coaching position in Shanghai.
Here are 3 things you’ll learn in this episode:
- The essential characteristics Darren needed to progress into full time coaching
- The value of seeking the advice of experts from outside soccer
- How coaching in China challenges everything you think you know about both soccer and life
