The Gap: Why Knowing What You Want Isn’t Enough

You know what you want.

You might even know exactly what you need to do.

So why are you still not doing it?

In this episode of The Phoenix Within, Darran and Andrea explore the gap between knowing and doing, and why understanding what needs to change does not always make taking that first step any easier.

Following on from their conversation about whether it is ever too late to change, they look at what happens when the desire is there, the destination is reasonably clear, but something still keeps us standing still.

Is it really a lack of motivation? Are we waiting to feel confident before we act? When does a perfectly reasonable reason for waiting become a way of protecting ourselves from uncertainty?

The conversation explores the fears that can sit underneath our excuses, why familiar discomfort can sometimes feel safer than unfamiliar change, what our physical reactions might be telling us, and the importance of asking not only what might happen if we make a change, but what it could cost us if we never do.

They also look at why action does not have to mean taking an enormous leap. Sometimes the way across the gap begins with one very small, specific step.

And it all leads to one deceptively simple question:

If you know what you want, you know it is not too late, and waiting is not going to magically make you feel ready, what are you actually waiting for?

About the Podcast: The Phoenix Within

Helping Men Find Their Way Back

Hosted by coach and mentor Andrea Sandiford, with co-host Darran Wilson, The Phoenix Within is a monthly podcast that creates space for men to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.

Each episode tackles the quieter struggles many men face — identity, confidence, purpose, and change — often buried beneath roles, routines, and expectations. Whether you’re feeling stuck, lost, or unsure of who you are anymore, this series offers a calm, honest space to start finding your way again.

Born from years of coaching men through big life shifts, Andrea brings clarity, warmth and experience to every conversation — while Darran helps shape the flow and asks the questions listeners might not know how to put into words.

This isn’t therapy, and it’s not a quick fix.

It’s about rebuilding — gently, honestly, and with purpose.

Because sometimes the first step forward… is just being heard.
