Many commercial drivers can have difficulty sleeping, or even struggle with depression or memory issues. Dr. Rebecca M. Allen is the director of neuropsychiatry at the Seattle Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center. She authored a chapter on sleep and sleep disorders for the Harvard textbook Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology: Principles and Practice. Dr. Allen is trained in the neurobiological bases and treatment of cognitive and behavioral changes due to neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions. In this episode of The Truckers Network Radio Show with Shelley Johnson, Dr. Allen talks about how the brain works and what happens in our brains when we sleep or are sleep deprived.
