Ooi Lay Pheng is the CEO of Berjayapak Sdn Bhd in Penang, Malaysia.
She is in the business of providing wood packaging solutions such as pallets, crates and boxes to multinational corporations that need to ship and send their precious cargo all over the world.
This is a multi-million ringgit industry but it is also a rough-and-tough business. The wood packaging industry is a challenging industry as sustainable timber resources need to be managed while competitors are aplenty. The factory is usually hot, noisy and dusty. In fact, Lay Pheng has experienced going into forests and jungles to visit timber suppliers and check on the wood supplies!
Lay Pheng returned to helm the family business not because she wanted to but because her father asked her to. She couldn’t refuse as this family business was truly built on sweat, grit and tears.
She put aside her own plans which included her own business to step up and lead the manufacturing business.
The business has since expanded into Vietnam with more countries to come. In the last five years that she has come onboard, the company has gone on to win multiple awards for quality and innovation with the most recent one being Asia’s Leading SME Award in 2020.
