On Episode 136 of You, Me, Empathy, somatic and transformational coach Rebecca-Monique beautifully shares about the time she literally lost her voice after losing her adoptive mother, protecting herself early on from pain and trauma by internalizing it, psychological abuse, and how we have everything within ourselves to thrive, despite the barriers and challenges.

Rebecca-Monique and I talk about how she moved from Africa to the UK when she was a child, how she developed survival techniques throughout childhood that would later hinder her, the juxtaposition of becoming a mom and not having a strong mother figure in her life, why shame silences us, attachment styles, defensive mechanisms, communicating the “why”, the suffering we experience when we don’t look, and why healing is relational and communal.

Finally, we explore intergenerational trauma and racial trauma, including inner child work, the covert forms of racism that persist at the foundational level in our society that we need to unlearn and disrupt, the trauma we hold in our bodies, the lived experience of Black bodies, and forgiving ourselves for the pain and trauma we’ve experienced.

Rebecca-Monique is doing amazing work in the world! Give her a follow on Instagram @rbccmnq and rbccmnq.com. Thanks to Rebecca-Monique for sharing her story!

You, Me, Empathy

You, Me, Empathy is the official podcast of The Feely Human Collective. Join the community at FeelyHuman.co/membership.

On this show, we explore the struggles, the triumphs, the brights and the darks we face as humans trying to be human on this wondrous and overwhelming pale blue dot.

You, Me, Empathy was created so that we can be witness to our collective humanity through the lens of empathy, vulnerability, and emotional curiosity. We aim to destigmatize mental health, lead fiercely with our hearts, feel our feelings without shame and judgment, and share our courageous stories so that others may feel less alone and more connected as feely humans.

You, Me, Empathy is a brave place designed to inspire the beauty in each of us, because each of us, in all of our kaleidoscopic parts, makes up a magical whole that deserves to be seen.

Created and hosted by Nōn Wels (he/him), feely human, writer, and doggo lover.
