Episode Info

On this week's episode of the Reputation Revolution podcast, host Trevor Young chats with Dr Emma Beckett, a food and nutrition scientist with the University of Newcastle, who uses social media effectively to generate interest in, and discussion around, all things nutrition.

Emma's mission is to empower people to make their own decisions around food and nutrition, whether those be healthier decisions or happier decisions.

Interestingly, a key outcome of her social efforts, particularly on Twitter, is interest from mainstream media, resulting in editorial coverage, including interviews on radio and national television.

Emma says: "... sometimes it comes from ... I do a little rant on Twitter and a producer will send me a message saying instead of a Twitter rant, that could be a nice little piece on my show."

We discuss how Emma injects her personality into her micro-content, blending nutrition tips with food-inspired dresses and earrings to reinforce her message.

Emma's catch-cry? "Come for the fashion, stay for the science!"

In this wide-ranging chat, Trevor and Emma touch on:

  • the importance of being human on social media
  • how having a unique twist in your content can be a great way to cut through the clutter and get noticed
  • how Twitter can be an effective way to connect with journalists, editors and broadcast producers
  • why having the same social media 'handle' across different channels can help build a consistent brand presence

If you're interested in using social media to convey a message and grow your sphere of influence, this is one episode you won't want to miss!
