The Peter Motley Experience
This is the story of Peter Motley, a talented football player for the Sturt Football Club in the SANFL in Adelaide South Australia before moving interstate with VFL football club Carlton in Melbourne, Australia.
Peter is the son of former nine-time Port Adelaide premiership star, 1964 Magarey Medal winner Geof Motley and Gaynor his Mother who represented Australia in netball and basketball and played state softball.
Peter made his league debut for Sturt in 1982 and played 92 games for the Double Blues until 1985. Motley's breakout season was in 1983 when he played both at centre half-forward and centre half-back for Sturt and helped them to the SANFL Grand Final against West Adelaide.
Peters’s success at Sturt caught the attention of Victorian club Carlton, who recruited him to play for them in the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1986.
Peter had a natural talent for the sport from an early age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Sturt Football Club's junior teams.
Peter made his senior debut for Sturt in 1981 and quickly established himself as a key player in the team. He was a highly skilled and versatile player, able to play in a range of positions, including in the midfield, on the wing, and in defence. Over the course of his career, Peter won numerous accolades, including two Magarey Medals, which are awarded to the best and fairest player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).
In 1985, Motley was also awarded the Jack Oatey Medal for being the best player on the ground in Sturt's grand final victory.
In May of 1987, Peter was involved in a tragic car accident that left him unable to play the game he loved, but Peter remained involved in the sport, serving as a mentor to younger players and as an inspiration to the wider football community.
Peters's story is one of both triumph and tragedy, and he is remembered as one of the greatest players ever to wear the Sturt Football Club Guernsey.
Despite the tragedy, Peter kept a positive attitude and was an example of courage and resilience to all of those around him. He showed us how to face adversity and reminded us to stay happy and grateful for our lives. Peter's story inspires us all and reminds us to keep pushing forward no matter the circumstances.
